Bone and joint health physicians re-locate in the spring of 2015 yet remain Rosemont residents

New beginnings at River and Higgins roads

The construction site at the corner of River and Higgins roads will be the new home of Building Orthopaedics, which consists of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 25 affiliated orthopaedic specialty organizations, and a state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC) that will bring physicians and health care professionals from throughout the world to Rosemont, Ill. A 155-room hotel is planned for the west end of the site. A six-story parking deck will be developed and shared with the hotel.

Size/features of the new building

The AAOS building will occupy approximately 2.2 acres on the east end of the 5-acre property. The new headquarters will be five stories tall and approximately 180,000 square feet, increasing useable office space and allowing for future growth. The OLC will double in size, providing greater amenities and technological capabilities, including:

  • distance learning opportunities, including an international reach for webcast courses;
  • a 24-station skills lab which can simultaneously accommodate multiple courses; and
  • an OLC auditorium, divisible into three separate rooms, with state-of-the-art technology and seating for up to 180 participants.

Construction timeline

Construction on the new building began in August 2013 and is expected to conclude in the spring of 2015 (approximately 18 months). Wright Heerema Architects designed the building for AAOS and its four equity partners: the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and OLC. Pepper Construction is the builder and Jones Lang LaSalle is the project manager and real estate consultant to the Academy.

AAOS and Rosemont: a 20+ year partnership

Headquartered in Rosemont at 6300 N. River Rd. since 1992, the AAOS has been an active community partner and Rosemont Chamber of Commerce member for more than 20 years. The seven-story structure AAOS currently occupies cannot adequately support the continued growth of the OLC and the need for additional space by the orthopaedic organizations sharing the structure. The Academy leadership was committed to keeping AAOS in Rosemont because of its proximity to transportation; as well as the village’s world-class restaurants, hotels and entertainment.

Founded in 1933, the AAOS is the preeminent provider of musculoskeletal education to orthopaedic surgeons and others in the world. It’s continuing medical education activities include a world-renowned Annual Meeting, multiple CME courses held around the country and at the OLC, and various medical and scientific publications and electronic media materials.

Orthopaedic surgeons are physicians concerned with the diagnosis, care, and treatment of bone and joint health, otherwise known as musculoskeletal disorders
