On a crisp, cool, sunny fall day, close to 50 children revved up their bikes and participated with several members of the local public safety department in the third annual Rosemont Public Safety Bike Parade from Rosemont School to the Margaret J. Lange Park last Sunday morning. The occasion was to kick-off the National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11.

As part of fire prevention week, the Rosemont Public Safety Dept. will provide several programs on fire prevention at local schools and fire stations.

On Sunday, local children lined up on decorated bikes, Big Wheels, wagons and scooters to participate in the parade with fire trucks, police cars and emergency vehicles.  Many parents also participated.

At the end of the parade prizes were given to three participants judged to have the best bike decorations supporting the theme “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives”.

The first place prize went to six-year-old Haily Cajigas, who won a bowling party from Kings Bow. Her bike had a box painted like a fire truck with a safety message on the side.

Second place winner was three-year-old Natalie Shumoon who won tickets to a Chicago Wolves hockey game. She had a colorful sign warning of the importance for people to have working fire alarms.

Third place winner was three-year-old Matthew Cooper who won movie tickets from Muvico Theatre. His bike and sign carried helpful messages about fire safety and prevention.

Rosemont’s Public Safety Dept. hosts the parade to increase fire safety and prevention awareness.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in the U.S. in 2011, fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,910 civilian injuries, 2,520 civilian deaths, and $6.9 billion in direct damage.

The NFPA notes cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, followed by heating equipment.
