Bridge Work To Shut Down East River Road at I-90
The bridge which carries East River Road over the Kennedy Expressway (I-90), just south of Park Ridge and east of Rosemont, will close Thursday, April 21st for reconstruction, weather permitting. It is not expected to reopen until fall, the Illinois Dept. of Transportation announced Monday.
State transit officials said the complete closure is the most efficient way to finish the work in a single construction season. It is part of a collaboration between IDOT and Chicago.
Traffic which normally uses the bridge, including vehicles, pedestrians and equestrians who use the horse trails through the adjacent forest preserves, will be detoured.
Northbound traffic will be directed to go east on Bryn Mawr Avenue to the Cumberland Avenue curve, north on Cumberland to Higgins Road, and west back to East River Road, which is called Dee Road north of Higgins, going into Park Ridge.
Southbound traffic will follow a reverse route, entering westbound Bryn Mawr at the next stoplight beyond the Cumberland rapid transit station.
All ramps for westbound expressway traffic will remain operational at Cumberland.
Between the Cumberland interchange and the Des Plaines River, the northwest-bound expressway begins its multi-lane transition to the Jane Addams Tollway, O’Hare Airport and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294).
In addition, IDOT anticipates overnight lane closures and intermittent stops on Interstate 90 and Interstate 190. The heavy traffic demands on this transportation corridor includes 50,000 workers at the airport, 190,000 passengers arriving and departing, and access to two major tollways to business corridors to the north, northwest and south suburbs.
The East River Road bridge will be demolished, with overnight single lane closures in each direction.
A temporary pavement for drivers to use will be built along the north side of I-90 near the bridge in preparation for a second phase.
The construction has been split between two contractors, F.H. Paschen and S.N. Nielsen & Associates. The cost is estimated at $10.05 million.
The westbound inside lane on the Kennedy, next to the CTA Blue Line tracks will have work during the second phase, with the four westbound lanes shifted one lane to the north while a pier is constructed next to the Cumberland rapid transit platform.
This project, known as the “Cumberland Flyover,” will build a bridge of four spans, about 845 ft. long, going across the CTA Blue Line and eastbound I-90. Four retaining walls are scheduled to be built east and west of the flyover.
Eastbound traffic from the Jane Addams to the Kennedy will see reconstruction and widening of lanes between the Des Plaines River and the I-90/I-190 merge. A new CD roadway is planned to exit to southbound Cumberland from the Kennedy.
The eastbound lanes will be resurfaced from the Jane Addams to the Kennedy as far as Cumberland. New lighting will include conventional lights and high mast tower lights. CCTV will have new camera towers. Landscaping, pavement marking and signage are also planned. All businesses are expected to remain open for the duration of the project.
Motorists are alerted to expect delays and to pay close attention to flaggers, crews and warning signs in the work zones.
