Discussions Underway About Possibly Expanding Outlet Mall
Discussions on possibly expanding the 550,000 sq. ft. Rosemont outlet mall are underway that could result in the owners of the mall acquiring an option to add another 200,000 sq. ft. on property where the Rosemont Theatre now stands.
“We’ve been working on it for quite a while,” said Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens last Wednesday referring to discussions about mall owner, Macerich, securing an option.
“It would be all subject to a redevelopment agreement,” added the mayor. He said the possible agreement could be for five years to allow time for Macerich to plan and market the expansion project. Macerich would pay the village a yet-to-determined amount of money to purchase the option.
Fashion Outlets Chicago opened on Aug. 1, 2013 on the south side of Balmoral Avenue east of the Tri-State Tollway. Almost from the beginning there’s been talk about the mall expanding to the east toward River Road on village-owned property where the 4,200-seat theater is located. Should the mall be expanded in that direction, the theater would be torn down and a new venue constructed that would seat approximately 2,500 people -- similar to theaters in Chicago, said Stephens.
