Rosemont officials, contractors, architects, a few fans and woman’s softball star Jennie Finch broke ground last Friday on the new 1,500-seat Rosemont ballpark that will be built on property along the Tri-State Tollway and Bryn Mawr Avenue.
The approximately 15 participants in the ceremony used shovels to scoop up dirt on the ground where the stadium will be built and where Chicago Bandits softball games will be hosted starting in June. Mayor Bradley Stephens and Bandits owner Bill Sokolis welcomed the popular Finch who participated in an unveiling of a street sign naming Jennie Finch Way.
The Bandits will play approximately 25 home games in the new arena from June through August. For the last several years, their home field has been at Judson University in Elgin. The team hopes to increase attendance beyond the average 600 per game at Judson.
Rosemont will spend close to $6 million to build the stadium where not only Bandit games will be played but where other athletic and entertainment events will be staged, said Mayor Stephens.
