The village of Rosemont took on a unique glow Monday in a worldwide effort to draw attention to the complex neurological disorder of Autism.
Several familiar spots in Rosemont were aglow in bright blue as part of the fourth annual United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day campaign, "Light It Up Blue."
Autism affects 1 in 110 children and 1 in 70 boys, according to Autism Speaks events manager Mary Rios in a letter to Mayor Bradley Stephens. Autism transcends all social, cultural and geographic boundaries, and has become the fastest growing global public health crisis.
Rosemont participated in the observance by dying the water in the village‚s waterfall at River and Higgins roads bright blue (see page 9A for photo). The village-owned sign along the Jane Addams Tollway adjacent to the Allstate Arena took on a bright blue color as did the electronic sign in front of the Rosemont shopping plaza on Higgins Road east of River. Other sites in Rosemont that were clad in blue included the digital sign over River Road at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, the turnaround drive at the convention center and lights over the plaza area at The Park at Rosemont.
