Magical is one way to describe the Donald E. Stephens ballroom in the process of being transformed Tuesday morning, Dec. 8 into a “Winter Wonderland” for the annual Saturday, Dec. 12 Operation North Pole event where terminally ill children and their parents are first treated to breakfast, then taken from Des Plaines to Crystal Lake on a decorated Metra train.
After the train ride, participants are escorted by public safety officials to the convention center in Rosemont to a large party in the ballroom dressed up like the North Pole. The ballroom will feature individually decorated Christmas trees, snowmen, giant toys and candy along with a large train set and more.
When they open the doors, visitors will be greeted by magical colors and people throughout the community including local police officers and firefighters. Everything was donated and decorated by residents, businesses, local retailers, scout troops, schools and more.
