The Gigi’s Playhouse foundation said the close to 3,000 participating in the “Dash For Down Syndrome” race, walk, and family fest at MB Financial Park not only raised more than $170,000, but left with memories and praise for the venue and Village of Rosemont.

“People were telling us what a fabulous day they had. It was amazing,” Gigi’s Playhouse Director Mark Portugal told the Journal & Topics. “We were thrilled with the MB Financial Park facility and all the restaurants and venues that opened early for us. The hospitality and kindness shown by everyone was great. I ate way too much. The food was amazing. Not only that but the runners said this was one of the best courses they had ever run, reducing their race time significantly,” Portugal said. “The roads and areas where the runners and walkers went in Rosemont are in great shape and that definitely helped our runners and our walkers. We continue to hear rave reviews about the quality of the course.”

The event held Sunday, June 12 was more than a race. Throughout the day it featured live music, face painting, ongoing activities and special programs.

GiGi’s Playhouse began in 2003 in Hoffman Estates. It offers 30 educational and therapeutic programs at no charge to families with children or adults who have Down syndrome, including literacy programs. There are 23 playhouses in the U.S. and one in Queretaro, Mexico. Each year they host about 75 fundraisers throughout the U.S. and hope to return to Rosemont next year.
