Work on the East Leyden High School Annex sports fields should be completed sometime this fall.
Leyden High School Dist. 212 school board members last week accepted a bid to complete that area. The bid was awarded to Henry Brothers Company totaling $1,606,000.
The project calls for installation of an underground sprinkler system, two girls softball fields with backstops, two soccer fields and fencing around the remainder of the property, according to Dist. 212 chief financial officer Tom Janeteas.
“We are anticipating work to start in the middle of August and taking until the middle of November to complete,” Janeteas noted. Since these fields will be new additions to East Leyden, creating them would not affect fall sports. “Existing fields are still in place,” Janeteas said. “These will be new athletic areas.”
Additionally, school officials plan to add concession and storage buildings plus a maintenance garage after the fields are completed. Depending on when these are bid out and how soon winter sets in, these would be constructed either late fall or spring 2014, Janeteas explained. “The building work would not be awarded (to a bidder) until one of the October meetings,” he said.
Plans to acquire the annex and complete the fields have been in the works for about eight years. East Leyden acquired the outdoor Annex space in 2009. Parking for students and staff was constructed in the area last year. The area is approximately 12 acres altogether including the parking area, Janeteas noted.
Once school officials complete the concession and storage buildings along with the maintenance garage, all work for the Annex area is completed, he explained.
