Demolition Begins On River-Higgins Mobile

Andy Sokulski drained the last of the fuel from the tanks and loaded what was left of the food and other products into a truck. At the end of the day Tuesday, June 14, he closed his Mobil gas station at River and Higgins roads. The next day, after it was fenced off, demolition began on the corner lot across from Rosemont’s iconic gateway waterfall.

It took a year after the Rosemont Zoning Board unanimously approved a request in June 2015 to build a larger convenience store and add diesel fuel pumps at the gas station.

Sokulski leases the station from Buchanan Energy and has been running gas stations in Rosemont for more than 40 years. The last time the Mobil was upgraded was in 1989.

“There are so many regulations, especially environmental, that dictate what we can and cannot do and when,” Sokulski said. “So that was part of the delay in moving this project forward.”

The new Rosemont Mobil will eventually include a new convenience store, two fueling island bays with diesel and regular gas and three islands with regular gas, Sokulski said. He expects once demolition is completed, it would take 60 to 70 days to build the new gas station before opening to the public.

“I would suspect it would be open by mid or late August,” Sokulski told the Journal & Topics Friday. He is optimistic that his franchise lease will be renewed to open the new station. His lease usually runs from three to four years.

As for adding diesel fuel to the station for the first time, Sokulski said, “There is a real need to provide diesel fuel at this location. We’ve seen a major increase in the demand for diesel and now we’ll have it. The upgrade is necessary.”

Once it reopens, the Mobil station will operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
