The new mural being painted by local students inside the entry to the William Street parking garage in Rosemont features iconic art, Village landmarks and bursts of color.

The mural will feature art by Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein and Michelangelo fused with Rosemont landmarks. Some of the local landmarks to be included in the mural are the Rosemont water tower, the new gateway waterfall at River and Higgins and the new statue of former Mayor Donald E. Stephens located next to Village Hall off Devon Avenue.

Artist Rahmaan Barnes Statik, who is leading the project, told the Journal & Topics this week, “The theme of the mural is to create the garage into a street gallery. This is done by creating designs of famous museum standard art from around the world and collage them with Rosemont landmarks and places.”

Earlier this summer, 19 Rosemont college and high school students were selected to work on the mural with Statik. They began designing the mural in June and outlining it on the parking garage walls last week. They expect to complete the mural by fall.

Work had been pushed back one week as Statik and his wife Deana welcomed a new baby to the family, Takayalah Renee Barnes, named after Rahmaan’s aunt who passed away from breast cancer in 2010.

Village trustees last April approved the development and painting of a series of murals on the ground floor of the parking garage for $65,000. The painting will be done in conjunction with restoration work in the garage that’s located between MB Financial Park and the convention center on River Road.

The students selected to participate, and the schools they attend, are: Adeline Bieniarz, East Leyden High School; Veronica Caracomo, American Academy of Art; Steven Chen, American Academy of Art; Kaylee Coyle, University of Dayton; Jasmine Cienfuegos, Columbia College; Tracy Danet, American Academy of Art; Andrea Dunn, Columbia; Kamila Eva, Columbia; Elizabeth Garcia, East Leyden; Luis Garcia, East Leyden; Haley Grison, American Academy of Art; Peyton Johnson, Columbia; Jesus Martinez, American Academy of Art; John McCormick, Columbia; Andrea Ocampo, American Academy of Art; Lauren Schuster, East Leyden; Katie Wagner, Columbia; Michael Winfield, Columbia; and Angelica Urbina, East Leyden.
