Rosemont Transit Center Upgrades About To Begin

Renovations and building of new curbs, basins, pedestrian walkways, bus bays, passenger pickup and drop-off areas at the Rosemont Transit Center on River Road has begun.

Construction cones, barrels and work equipment are taking position to upgrade the transit center built in 1983. It handles more than 6,000 commuters a day.

The project will improve the area for commuters and users, including adding tools for bicyclists such as bike racks and more, Cook County Dept. of Transportation and Highways Supt. John Yonan told the Journal & Topics last June.

The project is expected to cost $1.5 million and be completed by October.

The transit center lies at the intersection of I-190 and Des Plaines River Road just south of I-90. The CTA Blue Line train, connecting commuters between O’Hare Airport and downtown Chicago, stops in Rosemont throughout the day. Several area Pace bus lines and local shuttles make regular stops there as well, as do taxi drivers and others just dropping-off and picking up local residents.

Renovations call for adding safer pedestrian walkways, reconfiguring the parking and bus bays, reengineering the parking lot layout and more. The cutaway bays for buses will be changed so as to reduce any conflict with pedestrian traffic, officials said.

During renovations, parking will be reduced. Officials encourage drivers to use the Cumberland CTA station east of Rosemont along the Kennedy Expressway (I-90).

During construction, ADA Paratransit/Rosemont Circulator ADA Paratransit and the Rosemont Circulator buses will board in the same area, on the west side of the bus bay where ADA pickups and drop-offs currently occur.

Officials also say sidewalk construction will impact access to the area, so ADA Paratransit and the Rosemont Circulator will be moved to the east side of the bus bay in August. In August and September, all Kiss-n-Ride pickups and dropoffs, as well as all shuttle and taxi service, will move to the north lot temporarily. Charter buses and any vehicle over 30-ft. not operated by Pace or CTA are being told to use Cumberland station. This month and in August, the east sidewalk, nearest the large lot, will be expanded followed by the west sidewalk closer to River Road.

During September and October, new express Pace bus service on I-90 will require new bays at the Rosemont station. Commuters are being told to check closely for the correct bus bay, as buses may be assigned to a different one at the station.

Also, parking islands will be modified and parking control devices will be installed.

The Pace I-90 market expansion program is being done in concert with the massive Illinois Tollway Jane Addams Memorial (I-90) rebuilding and widening project. Pace plans to add three new express routes, two distributor services and three new Park-n-Rides at the Rosemont Transit Center to serve passengers. New service will launch with completion of tollway construction at the end of 2016, with other enhancements to be completed in 2017.
