The new Dunne Park Recreation Center could be open for business by fall. Located at 9401-9499 Glenlake St., south of Higgins Road and west of River Road, the estimated $3,551,083 recreation center on a former tennis court site could be completed by Labor Day, Rosemont Village Board members were told during their Wednesday, July 13 board meeting.

During that meeting, the board approved a $100,000 increase in the maximum price for additional construction needs, which include new doors and other provisions to comply with the American Disability Act (ADA), officials said.

Last February, the board approved spending $3.6 million on the new facility which is similar in size and offerings to the Rosemont Recreation Center on Barry Street.

Site plans also include constructing a new parking lot and improved underground water detention.
Dunne Park, officials note, was once a small gathering place originally used as a warming house for ice skaters on an adjacent pond.

The new, full-sized gym is connected to the small existing structure at the park via a hallway. Swans and ducks continue to swim and forage for food in the adjacent pond.

Officials have said Rosemont property owners will not see any additional charges on their future tax bills for this project because the funds will be recaptured by the park district through an expired Village tax increment financing district.

With the new recreation center, Village officials aim to better serve the large number of residents, especially children, who reside in as many as 160 apartments and six-flats in the area.

Dunne Park is named after former Cook County Board President George Dunne who helped secure former Cook County Forest Preserve property for the Village.

As opening day for the new structure inches closer, an annual operation budget will be developed for the building and recreation center personnel will be hired, Rosemont Park District officials told the Journal & Topics last week.
