Rosemont School Dist. 78 and the Susan G. Komen Foundation will both receive funds from the Rosemont School Benefit Club’s 5K run/walk this Friday.
Proceeds from the race are split in half, with equal parts going toward both the Benefit Club’s $20,000 fundraising goal as well as breast cancer research and outreach through Susan G. Komen.
Vanessa Cooper, Benefit Club president, said when the members began planning last year’s inaugural 5K, they quickly decided to also support Susan G. Komen as a nod to October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“It started off just kicking off the new [school] year,” Cooper said. “We figured we could tie it in and walk for a cause that affects a lot of women.”
Last year’s 5K saw 175 Rosemont residents participating. So far, more than 250 walkers have already registered two weeks before the race.
The club honors survivors by giving them the starting position as the walk/run begins, preceded only by Rosemont Public Safety officers leading the way.
Cooper said she is excited to see how many community members without students in Rosemont School attend the 5K, like a group of senior citizens planning on cheering everybody on as they pass by.
“[I look forward] just to seeing the community come together,” she said. “We all have a mom, or a grandma, or a sister, or a cousin we don’t want affected by [breast cancer].”
Last year, the Benefit Club raised $5,000 total during the 5K, a number they hope to double this year.
Cooper said the 5K is part of the group’s broader efforts to raise funds through family activities and community events rather than straightforward fundraising.
“The Benefit Club is trying to steer clear with door-to-door sales,” she said.
Check-in for the walk/run will begin at 6 p.m. Participants will take off from Rosemont School, looping around the community before returning to the school without crossing any major roads or obstacles.
The registration cost of $20 will include a raffle ticket and a t-shirt for those who pre-register. Prizes will be given away during a drawing at the post-race party, which will feature food and other entertainment in the school gym until 9 p.m.
