This year Rosemont Helping Hand, a local charitable organization, plans to help 151 families in need, with a total of 190 children, celebrate the holidays with gift card donations.
According to Rosemont Helping Hand President Rick Drehobl, each Rosemont family in need will receive a $50 gift card they can use to buy holiday food and supplies. Until about five years ago, the organization used to give families in need turkeys. However, Drehobl said the birds became hard to deliver.
“We loved doing the turkeys, but people wouldn’t be home,” when they delivered them to local homes, he said. “We could be left with 30 [turkeys] by the end of the day.”
In addition to the $50 gift cards, $35 gift cards will be offered for each child in need in the village to purchase gifts. Drehobl said a group of Rosemont seniors also put together holiday stockings for each needy child in the village.
Donations from local businesses, as well as proceeds from the annual Rosemont Chamber of Commerce Holiday Gala, are used to purchase the gift cards. This year, the 26th annual gala will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.
Families with children at Rosemont Elementary School or Orchard Place Elementary School in Des Plaines, who receive free or reduced lunches, are eligible for the donations, Drehobl told the Journal & Topics.
After letters are sent to eligible families, they can pick up their gift cards at the Barry Recreation Center, 7128 Barry St., Rosemont.
