If there was any question about the importance of donating blood products, simply read the words of blood and platelet recipient Kristina Edgeworth.
“The reality is I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for people willing to donate blood,” the 34-year-old Chicagoan said. “Blood donors saved my life.”
Fit and active with no previous medical issues, Kristina was the picture of health. However, 15 minutes after delivering her first child she suffered a postpartum hemorrhage and doctors whisked her out of the birthing room as her husband looked on shocked and in disbelief.
Thankfully the blood products Kristina needed — 13 units of red blood cells and several units of platelets — were on the shelf at the hospital and she made a full recovery.
Despite miraculous advancements in medicine, there is no substitute for human blood. Kristina is proof anyone at any time may require blood products.
Her story is a perfect example why blood products need to be available at all times. Her story is the reason why blood centers like LifeSource exist today.
Since opening in January of 1987, Lifesource’s mission has been to provide best in class blood products and clinical services to meet the needs of the healthcare community, patients and our donors through advanced transfusion medicine practices.
Today, LifeSource is headquartered at 5505 Pearl St. in Rosemont and operates 17 community donor centers from Gurnee in the North to Lansing in the South. In addition, we hold mobile blood drives each day at businesses, places of worship, community centers and schools in the Chicagoland area. Donor coaches, or “bloodmobiles,” enable us to bring blood drives to block parties and community festivals where indoor space is unavailable.
LifeSource, a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, relies on blood donors to ensure an adequate supply for patients in need of transfusions at the hospitals we service.
Collecting blood products isn’t the only way we make a positive impact in our community. LifeSource partners with Operation North Pole, an annual event held in December at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center that provides a day of fun and fantasy for families who have a child battling a life-threatening illness.
LifeSource also has a close relationship with area police officers, firefighters and emergency medical service groups. Ten years ago we established the successful Everyday Heroes Give Back Program in which we present points to these groups for hosting blood drives. The points are then redeemed for scholarship money that goes to local first responders seeking higher education.
We are also dedicated to supporting local high schools through education and awareness of the need for blood donation. Our High School Scholarship Program rewards schools for hosting blood drives by presenting them with scholarship dollars based on the number of units collected. We provided nearly $270,000 in scholarship money to high schools last year.
Around Memorial Day and the Fourth of July we made a donation for every donor to Operation Support Our Troops, a group dedicated to boosting the morale and well-being of American troops and veterans through comfort, resources and education to them and their families. This fundraiser with our donors raised a significant amount of money for the Naperville-based non-profit.
We are proud to call Rosemont home and are excited for the changes and growth to the Village in the coming months. We look forward to continuing to work with many of you and establishing new relationships with those we have not yet met as we save lives through blood donation.
Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion.
