Soccer Field Walls Spring To Life

Journal & Topics Reporter

A new gigantic mural, exploding with color and created by local students, was unveiled by Mayor Brad Stephens last Saturday, Aug. 22 with great fanfare during a celebratory community picnic at the Rosemont Recreation Center on Barry Street.

This is the second mural created and produced by Rosemont high school and college students as part of the village’s two-year-old “It’s Art Here” program aimed at encouraging and supporting local children and teens interested in art.

Last year’s mural depicting iconic characters and key area scenes, which spans three outdoor walls on two buildings, received so much positive feedback from residents and visitors that officials decided to do another one next to the rec center’s new athletic turf fields.

Not only are Rosemont residents proud of the murals, but the students said they were pleased to be able to learn from celebrated Chicago artist Rahmaan Statik while drawing out and painting the newest mural.

As for the picnic, close to 250 residents attended. Activities featured an all-you-can eat buffet with hamburgers, hot dogs and dessert, along with music, face-painting, outdoor games and more. The village donated scooters and helmets provided to attendees through a raffle.

Kids played soccer with village public safety officers and swarmed to compete on several inflatable games outside on the turf next to the mural.

Every child asked about the mural Saturday told the Journal & Topics that they really liked it and that the artists did a great job in drawing and painting “such a large” scene. The mural spans three long walls the length of about three blocks and runs along the width of the athletic field at the recreation center.

Close to 25 Rosemont Public Safety officers played soccer with attendees and served up the picnic food.

Twelve local artists were hired by the Rosemont Park District to design and paint the mural under the leadership of Chicago artist Statik and recreation center Director Omar Camarillo.
