The "OOMPAPA" of Oktoberfest comes to MB Financial Park

Since 1810, Bavarians have gathered to celebrate Oktoberfest, an annual festival that began with the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Hofbräuhaus Chicago will bring this annual celebration of Bavarian culture, cuisine and of course, delicious beer to the Chicago area from Sept. 11 through Oct. 31.

Festivities include authentic Bavarian entertainment, freshly brewed “Oktoberfestbier” inspired by the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany, daily food specials and celebrity keg tapping ceremonies.

Throughout the 51-day celebration, guests can enjoy nightly live entertainment combined with a menu of mouthwatering traditional Bavarian specialties served by Dirndl-wearing waitresses. Oktoberfest entertainers include a lively 40-piece German Bugle band, live music every day from “Die Schluchtenflitzer,” direct from Bavaria, a Dirndl fashion show and traditional German dance troupes. Visit for a complete daily entertainment calendar.

Hofbräuhaus Chicago is teaming up with the famous brothers of Walter E. Smithe Furniture and Design to kick off the bash Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. The brothers will be on-site filming a special Oktoberfest-themed TV commercial at the “haus,” with special surprises planned throughout the evening.

In honor of Oktoberfest, Hofbräuhaus Chicago will brew an “Oktoberfestbier” using the same method used for centuries at the original Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany. All of the beers at Hofbräuhaus Chicago are brewed at the on-site micro-brewery led by a brewmaster who is 2 Oktoberfest Returns to Hofbräuhaus Chicago trained in the 400-year-old recipes and techniques needed for the production of Hofbräuhaus Chicago’s beer.

Limited-time Oktoberfest daily specials will be offered Monday-Friday from 4 p.m. to close. Specials include:

Mondays: Sautéed sliced pork loin served with house-made Spätzle, crispy onion straw and broccoli

Tuesdays: Tender braised pork roast smothered in HB Bier-onion gravy, served with pretzel dumpling slices and root vegetables

Wednesdays: Tender braised pork shanks with mashed potatoes, bacon sauerkraut and HB Bier gravy

Thursdays: Roasted smoked pork belly and grilled smoked Kassler pork chop with German pan-fried potatoes and HB Bier gravy

Fridays - Saturdays: Chef’s special, changing weekly

Sundays: Braised beef roulade stuffed with bacon, pickle, onion and mustard and served with Spätzle, red cabbage and savory gravy

In addition to the Oktoberfest daily food specials, Hofbräuhaus Chicago will sell traditional cinnamon sugar roasted nuts Thursday through Sunday evenings during Oktoberfest. In keeping with German tradition, the nuts are freshly roasted on-site, filling the venue with delicious aromas.

On Friday and Saturday nights during Oktoberfest, patrons will have the opportunity to participate in the famous Masskrugstemmen contest (a stein-holding competition). “Masskrugstemmen,” which loosely translates to mean “the lifting of a liter mug of beer,” is a Bavarian sport that requires strength, stamina and pure determination. The “Masskrug” is a one liter stein, and the goal is to hold the filled stein parallel to the floor using one arm only. The person who holds it out the longest is the winner.

In addition to stein holding competitions, every Friday during Oktoberfest Hofbräuhaus Chicago will host traditional keg tapping ceremonies. Special celebrity guests will be brought in to tap the keg each week.

Oktoberfest is the perfect time to plan a group outing at Hofbräuhaus Chicago. The spacious venue features a welcoming Biergarten that overlooks MB Financial Park and two comfortable rooms available for private parties that provide the ideal backdrop for a birthday celebration, wedding or corporate event. The Beer Hall or “Schwemme” seats more than 500 guests and the King Ludwig Room can accommodate up to 180 people for a unique celebration.
